Wrinkles

As we age, there is loss of supporting structures in our skin called elastin and collagen, later on fat and bone loss also occurs. This produces wrinkles, sagging and folds. Aging is due to intrinsic factors and extrinsic factors e.g. sun exposure, pollution. The aging process occurs fairly early on in life and becomes progressive worse over decades.

How Can We Prevent Wrinkles?

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure, take cover with clothing, sunglasses and 3 inch wide brimmed hat.
  • A sunscreen and anti-oxidant serum should be used to prevent oxidative injury to the skin.
  • Topical retinol or retinoids at night time can be used as a prevention treatment for fine lines of the face.

How Can We Treat Wrinkles?

Topical retinols or retinoids can be used for fine lines at night.

Upper half of the face:

We often see lines of forehead, middle of the brow, nose and around the eyes. These area have very dynamic groups of small muscles. By relaxing these muscles with neuro-toxin/ neuro-modulator injections, we can reduce the appearance of fine lines. Neuro-toxin are degraded by the body slowly over time, therefore, re-treatment is necessary usually at 3-4 monthly intervals.

Fine Wrinkles of the lower face and neck:

These can be treated with Restylane skin boosters. Restylane skin boosters contain hyaluronic acid which helps to hydrate, improve texture and fine lines. Two treatments one month apart maybe required, then subsequently every 6 months.

Sagging and folds of the lower face:

We can consider dermal filler injections. MW Skin concept uses hyaluronic acid fillers to reduce sagging and improve folds. The reason to hyaluronic acid over other types of fillers is to reduce the chance of immune reaction and allergy. Hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring in our skin. Hyaluronic acid when placed in the skin create volume and provide structural support for tissue. It can create a more youthful appearance. Dermal fillers selection is based on the texture of your skin and whether lifting is required. The product may last from 6 to 18 months depending on which filler was used and where it was placed.
